My New Sport? Basketball! - by Landry

This year at Burnett Middle School, I decided to play basketball. Since me and my sister have a hoop at home, we always play against each other.

At first, my sister and I were on the 6th/7th grade team. But then, we were asked to move up to the 8th grade team for the playoffs.

Although  it wasn't a great season, we finished sixth. Only the 8th grade team gets to go to the playoffs, which is why our coach moved us up.

In this game we played against River Glen. We won this game and it moved us up to 6th place. This season was fun because my sister and I had never played on a basketball team before. We hope we can do it again next year.

Hanging on the Field with the Big Boys - By Landry

Tonight was the Stanford Football Team's last game. They were playing Rice University. After the game everybody got to go on the field. We caught up to Francis Owusu and he gave me and my sister each one of his gloves.
Since Christian McCaffrey is Stanford's best player, people were trying to get his autograph. We got to meet him up close while he was being interviewed.

Christian McCafferey decided this year that he was going to the NFL. This is Stanford's other running back, Bryce Love, who will be taking McCafferey's position (see him with me?)

This is Francis Owusu. He is one of Stanford's wide receivers. Francis' brother, Chris Owusu, graduated from Stanford the year before. He was also a wide receiver.

Kennedy got a glove from Johnny Caspers who you see in this picture. Stanford will be going to the Sun Bowl this year where hopefully they can beat North Carolina. This will be the first bowl game since we were born that we didn't attend.

Las Vegas Soccer Tournament - by Kennedy

Every year our Sporting soccer team goes to a tournament in Las Vegas. The whole team has fun together by going to the Strip and visiting lots of candy stores such as the M&M Factory, Coke Factory, and the Hershey Factory. Since the tournament is in August we wear pink jersey's to support breast cancer awareness.

The whole soccer team stayed in Vegas at the same hotel for the whole weekend. We won a game, lost a game, and tied a game. In between games we either rested at the hotel or toured the crazy city.

To end with, a group of my teammates went on the huge roller coaster and the game room. We did a manikin challenge by posing as the Statue of Liberty.

My First Speech Competition - by Kennedy

On a rainy weekend I had a speech competition at my school. This competition was hosted by my school and more than ten other schools brought there speech and debate teams. My teacher is Mrs. Wiedlin and she taught me how to use gestures, loud voice, and other useful strategies during a speech. There are four rounds at different classrooms against different students. Each classroom had four judges and you get scored on your speech.

There are five topics and the topic I chose was the Campaign Speech. The awards I got were Director's Award and the Superior Award. I went on stage and got the certificate in front of more than 200 students, teachers, and parents.

The Berkeley Half Marathon - by Landry

Today was the Berkeley Half Marathon. My mom was pacing the 2:40 half marathon.

These were the signs that they had to hold while they ran. While in the tent we were checking the rain forecast.

At the time it said it would not rain until the race was done. But a half mile in, the rain started to come down.

By mile three it was pouring and we were almost completely soaked. I was really cold and I wanted the race to be over.

Everybody was soaked. Even though my mom was a pacer we went a bit to fast because we just wanted to go home and get warm.

Punt, Pass & Kick Training - by Kennedy

I participated in a football competition based on how far you punt, pass, and kick a football.  I needed help on throwing the football farther so we went to Valley Christian High School and worked with Adam Tafralis. Adam Tafralis was the quarterback for the San Jose State football team and the Indianapolis Colts.

Adam Tafralis taught me that to throw the football far you need to face your target and pull your arm right by your ear. Also he suggested that you run then throw so that you get momentum when you throw the ball.

I was aiming to throw the football 75 feet. With out Adam's help I wouldn't have been able to throw the football as far.

By getting help on passing the football I was able to pass to the next round and get first place in the sectional, first place in the regional, and second place in 49ers competition.
